Diabetic Old Age
You couldn’t do it on a whim
although the decision would have to be sudden
you have to picture something from without
burning bush-y, that kind of portentous
to make you change your ways
a step up from command
and afterwards say, “In a flash”
like the blinding before the vocation
that it came to you
like a floating stone
henceforth to eat nothing but ice cream.
You wouldn’t have to tell people the truth
of course I would add pie
which is not to say lie
Pie Every Day (actual name of a cookbook;
incredibly, not a big seller)
but in company say, “I’ll just have dessert”
and when alone, out shopping for one
I couldn’t muster the discipline required
where the worst is always assumed
to limit my solids to cherries and mocha chunks
you won’t be alone in buying nothing but ice cream.
